THE Zimbabwe Handball Federation has picked Churchill and Girls High School to represent the nation at the Interamnia World Cup set for Teramo, Italy, in July. Churchill will field an Under-20 team in the boys section while Girls High School will field two teams — the 14-and-Under and the 16-and-Under girls.

The Interamnia Cup is considered as one of the biggest handball tournaments in the world and attracts players from all over the world like the Partille Cup. The tournament will run from July 6 to 11.

Zimbabwe will be making their debut appearance in Italy after receiving an invitation to participate in the tournament last year and ZHF secretary-general, Alphios Magiya said the development is a sign of the impact they have made at the Partille Cup where they usually send teams.

“What it means is that we are getting the recognition in handball meaning we have also reached a stage where our potential is recognised. The impact we have made at the Partille Cup have resulted in us getting this invitation from Italy.

“This will generate a lot of interest in the young athletes and it will promote the development and growth of handball in Zimbabwe. We also get a good status in sport because we are offering opportunities that expose talent,” said Magiya.

Magiya said they picked the top teams from the National Association of Secondary Schools Heads competitions but some of the schools could not take the offer because of lack of resources.

“We have Churchill and Girls High, those are the two schools that are going, that is the Under-20 boys and 16-and-Under and 14-and-Under girls’ teams from Girls High.

“We took them from the Nash teams that were in the top four, some failed due to financial constraints so Girls High took the opportunity.

This is the first time we are going there. We got the invitation last year and it’s a junior tournament with many teams from the world,” said Magiya.
