Gweru man escapes jail term

Midlands Reporter
A 78-year-old Gweru man was lucky to escape a prison term after he was convicted for fatally axing his son who had just come out of prison.

Savious Muzeza of Stains Ngamo Farm in Gweru appeared before Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Martin Makonese, facing one count of murder.

Justice Makonese was sitting during a Gweru High Court circuit recently.

In mitigation, a frail looking Muzeza said he was remorseful for his conduct which led to the death of his son, Cephas, who had just come out of prison. He said he was forced to defend himself after Cephas had become violent. Justice Makonese convicted Muzeza after a full trial before sentencing him to three years in prison which he suspended on condition of good behaviour. “l decided to give you a three-year sentence, which has been wholly-suspended for five years due to the fact you were defending yourself.”
