Cyclone Idai victims in Gutu last week received food hampers, clothes and other basic commodities from Gutu Development Network (GDN) and its partner All About Love Trust Zimbabwe.

The resources were mobilised from foreign partners, churches and individuals. Gutu Development Network chairperson Mr Murari Hwingwiri said the organisation was also mobilising more resources to go and donate in Gutu particularly in the resettlement areas that were hard hit by the cyclone.

“We are happy that the corporate world, churches and individuals took heed of the President Mnangagwa’s call to complement Government efforts in assisting the victims of Cyclone Idai. As Gutu Development Network, we managed to mobilise resources that we donated to our relatives in Gutu who were affected by the cyclone.

“We also have partners who are willing to assist the cyclone victims in Gutu. Some are abroad. We hope that we are going to do more and go beyond donating to Idai victims. “Our vision is to be part of the development of Gutu. Our roads are in a bad state, our schools, health facilities and other infrastructure needs improvement,” he said.

Gutu Development Network is an organisation made up of business people, academics, and experts in various economic sectors who hail from Gutu.

All About Love Trust Zimbabwe coordinator Mr Ian Matole said the organisation was in the process of conducting a needs assessment following a trail of destruction left by the cyclone.

Mr Matole said the organisation had its foreign partners who are willing to assist in both infrastructural development and food aid.

All About Love Trust Zimbabwe is a church organisation.

“We went to Gutu to assess the situation with the hope of bringing assistance and mobilising resources. We donated a few things we had but we hope that in the next few weeks we will bring more assistance,” he said.

At least 185 families were left homes after their homes were destroyed when Cyclone Idai ripped through the country last month while 2 119 others were affected.

This also raised the number of people in need of food aid in the district to 12 500.
