Grooming for work etiquette

Just about a week ago, we had Pokello Nare, the queen of swag, serving us with some high class business woman in a leopard print skirt and some lace blouse from Thula Sindi’s Apparel, Africa rise store.

She looked like nothing but an epitome of a classic corporate woman with some cool inspirational and motivational vibes.

Pokello has been nothing short of a fashion icon/hero with her dazzling Pink bottom shoe collection and her glamorous outfit combinations.

We cannot argue that she is an inspiration for many young Zimbabweans, and we love to see it.

The festive season isn’t all about Santa and thanksgiving, but it’s also a good season for those looking to kick-start business next year, drafting those contracts and setting those interview dates.

It is, therefore, important that as either a boss or an employee you look presentable.

How one appears in a boardroom, at a business meeting or in front of the bosses and other employees carries an aura, make it worthwhile — ALWAYS!

No doubt the wardrobe plays an important role in appearance, but it’s often personal grooming and hygiene that makes the biggest impression.

In the corporate world, the top personal grooming issues that garner attention (and complaints) are hair, dental hygiene, body scent and hands and nails.

Pay attention to your wrist as well.

The wrist watch is an accessory that won’t ever go out style when it comes to professional outfit.

It is the choice of the wrist watch that will affect your professional attire. For women, a classic round shape wrist watch with non-bling leather strap will be the best pick.

For men, a simple watch will blend perfectly with business suit. Try to pick the one with a leather strap with sober-style indexes preferably with circular.

Become a regular at your barber

Get into the habit of regularly visiting your barber: if you’ve noticed your hair needs a trim, then others have too.

That means you get proactive (as opposed to reactive). While some guys can settle for monthly appointments, your locks may still enjoy growth spurt, thus requiring increased attention.

As for women, visiting your hairdresser may not be as frequent as the gents’ but always keep a neat and presentable hair look.

One can never go wrong with a pony tail or a simply bun.

Perfume

A cardinal rule for wearing perfume at work is that a little goes a long way”. Choose a perfume with light floral and citrus scents.

Going to work with musky and sexy perfume is considered inappropriate. Another important tip is to resist the urge to reapply perfume.

People around you may be allergic to0 fragrances and your addiction to the perfume can worsen their health.

Trim your beard

A clean shave for work rule works in the corporate very well. For professional look, one must keep his beard trimmed because studies say that people who are unshaven are perceived to be more dominant and aggressive.

Having  an untrimmed beard is also a sign of being lazy and casual person. Do not let your personality be undermined because of your beard. Buy electric razors to maintain a short, trimmed beard on regular basis.

Nails

Cutting your nails once or twice a week is ideal. Long nails for males are as unattractive as dirty nails. For women however, someone once referred to manicure as “the one luxury that is necessary” which means we can’t keep women away from it isn’t possible.

It is, therefore, advice that when done doing the nails, they look short and neat.

Make-up

Less is more. Always wear minimum make-up to the office. Nude is the new classic, loud colours always send a bad impression and you wouldn’t want to be associated with such.

Buying an expensive business suit will not help if you are not clean or well groomed.

How you dress is exactly how people will see you and your organisation’s values are reflected in the way you dress and how your employers dress codes and grooming codes.

Be mindful of these for a successful business or job experience.
