The Government has opened a 3,8km stretch of dual carriageway and Mukuvisi River Bridge along Simon Mazorodze Road as more roads in and around the city are almost complete.

The opened road stretches from a traffic-controlled intersection of Simon Mazorodze Road and Waterfalls Avenue in Houghton Park to Murefu Service Station, a move which has been hailed by motorists saying it will help to ease congestion.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Engineer Joy Makumbe, Zinara board chairperson Dr George Manyaya, Zinara chief executive officer Mr Nkosinathi Ncube, and senior Government officials accompanied the minister when he opened the road this afternoon.

The road was constructed by a local company, Tensor Systems. The development comes after the Government said it will continue to work with all local authorities countrywide on road rehabilitation and construction countywide as the programme in Harare has also moved to high-density suburbs in line with the Government’s mantra of leaving no one and no place behind.

This development also puts to rest some critics’ allegations that the intensified road rehabilitation works in Harare are only targeting access roads leading to the new Parliament building where Zimbabwe will host the 44th session of the Sadc Summit later this month.

Last week, two roads that were recently constructed in Dzivarasekwa and Warren Park were reopened to traffic.

The road in Dzivarasekwa was opened to traffic from Sanganai Inn to an area known as Magetsi near Harare-Bulawayo Road while in Warren Park the road known as 4th Avenue stretches from the intersection of Harare-Bulawayo Road for about 3,4km.

The scope of work for the two road projects undertaken by ZADA Construction Company and Syvern Contracting included reconstruction and overlaying.
