Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Dr Sekai Nzenza last week met labour unions — the Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions (ZFTU) and the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) — to get an appreciation of issues affecting workers.

In a statement to The Herald yesterday, the ministry said the meeting was held on October 17. It followed another engagement with the APEX Council recently as part of the minister’s interface with labour unions.

Dr Nzenza appreciated contributions by labour towards the country’s development.

“In the meeting, the minister highlighted that Government valued the contributions of Labour to the development trajectory of the country enunciated by His Excellency President Mnangagwa. “The minister underscored the value that Government affords on the role of trade unions in the world of work, and the importance of dialogue among all parties, particularly with respect to addressing concerns of the most vulnerable groups of society and workers,” reads the statement.

Dr Nzenza expressed Government’s commitment towards strengthening the collective bargaining processes for the benefit of workers.

“In their submissions, social partners agreed with the minister to pursue social dialogue as the most viable way of addressing economic challenges and called for the urgent finalisation of the Tripartite Negotiating Forum legislation,” the ministry said.

“ZFTU highlighted the need to finalise the Labour Amendment Bill and to counterbalance Zimbabwe’s expected investment inflows with workers’ rights. ZCTU requested labour to be brought to the fore on Government’s policies and developmental programmes and further implored Government to uphold workers’ fundamental rights.”
