GOVERNMENT has allocated land to facilitate the relocation of St Charles Lwanga Seminary Secondary School after the Roman Catholic Church-run school in Chimanimani was affected by Cyclone Idai in March this year.

The land is in Ruwaka in the same district.

The cyclone destroyed dormitories, the dining hall and other infrastructure.

Two pupils died during the cyclone.

The school derives its name from a patron saint of youths, Charles Lwanga, who was tortured to death for his strong belief in Christ.

It celebrated is belated Golden Jubilee on June 3, 2017.

The Golden Jubilee celebrations were supposed to be celebrated in 2013, but were postponed for a number of reasons.

Manicaland provincial administrator Mr Edgars Seenza confirmed the development in an interview yesterday.

“The land was handed over to the school in an area called Ruwaka near Bumba along Chimanimani Road,” he said.

Mr Seenza said the development of the school was crucial in safeguarding the educational needs of children in the affected area.

“The land is for the development of the secondary school. It is now in the hands of the church to ensure that construction of the school begins as soon as possible. Other essential requirements like water and electricity will be provided to ensure that they get quality education,” he said

Before the cyclone, the school enrolled 300 boys. The number has since fallen to 60 after some parents withdrew their children fearing for their safety in the wake of the cyclone disaster.

A number of other schools were also affected by Cyclone Idai in Chimanimani and Chipinge districts and Government is making frantic efforts to ensure they are attended to.
