THE Zimbabwe developmental side – the Goshawks – left Zambia winless when they lost 19-12 to the hosts in the third-tier competition of the African Cup rugby competition at the Lusaka Showgrounds over the weekend.

Zimbabwe replaced Morocco who failed to travel to Zambia for the Group 1C competition but the Goshawks found the going tough and just as they did in their opening assignment they could not hold onto their lead.

According to reports from Lusaka, the Goshwaks took a 12-5 lead at half-time but allowed the Zambians to add 14 unanswered points in the second half.

Eventual winners Zambia – who now gain promotion to Group 1B – first beat Nigeria 38-22.

Zambia, through centre Martin Chisanga, were first on the scoresheet with an unconverted try.

Goshawks, who were under coach Nsikelelo “Sykes” Sibanda, quickly hit back with a brilliant try from scrumhalf Tawanda Chowe which Tinashe Gwisai failed to convert.

The Goshawks continued to play well in the opening period but somehow lost their steam in the second half.

Having lost 34-23 to Nigeria, yesterday’s defeat completed a fruitless tour for the Goshawks.
