Gokwe-Siabuwa Road rehabilitation begins

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has started work to rehabilitate Gokwe-Siabuwa Road.

The rehabilitation work, which includes bush clearing and resealing, is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development Midlands provincial roads Engineer Stephen Kamutema said work on the road had already started.

“We have already completed the first phase, which is extensive bush clearing, he said.

We managed to clear about 33 km with the help of the community whom we are engaging for casual employment.”

Eng Kamutema said they were targeting to reseal about 10,6 km with part of the 33km stretch earmarked for widening.

“We will redo the road up to Chitekete in the long run, but we will do it in phases as the funds are released. Generally, we are removing the old tar that had been potholed and replacing it, as well as widening some parts,” he said.

Eng Kamutema hailed the community for coming in handy and offering service.

“We want to thank the Gokwe community for offering their services, he said.

The first phase of the project which is extensive bush clearing is a tough job that we would not have achieved without the assistance of the community.”

The road is one of the major roads in Gokwe and its rehabilitation up to Chitekete will certainly mark improved service delivery in the area.

Gokwe, a cotton growing area, has most of its roads in deplorable state due to haulage trucks that frequent the roads to ferry the crop to the market.

The road works is part of Government efforts to rehabilitate infrastructure across the country in a quest to boost development.

In his inaugural speech, President Mnangagwa emphasised on the need to rehabilitate roads saying failure to do so would hamper development in the country.

Government recently launched the emergency road rehabilitation programme to the tune of $170 million which targets to rehabilitate roads across the country.
