Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) held their ninth edition of the national retailers and wholesale awards 2023 in which Geo Pomona Waste Management won a Presidential Special Award.

The recognition comes barely days after the waste management firm also scooped another prestigious Sustainability Innovation Champion award for its immense contribution to the sustainability of the environment.

CZR this year’s awards were held at a local hotel on Tuesday night.

Deputy Minister for Industry and Commerce Roy Bhila who was the guest said this year alone retailers contributed 18,7 percent towards the national gross domestic product (GDP) ahead of mining, agriculture among others.

Deputy Minister Bhila said these awards have become a significant feature in the national and CZR calendar as they seek to appreciate what the private economy has done for the nation at large.

“These awards aim to recognise and appreciate retail and wholesale sector players for their earnest support to the development of our national economy,” he said.

“This volume speaks of the critical role the retail and wholesale sector play in the economy, and the achievement of the national vision of an upper middle-income society by 2030.”

Deputy Minister Bhila hailed the sector which employs more than 70 000 of the people saying Harare province alone last year contributed 24,5 percent largely on the back of a robust expansion within the sector.

CRZ president Dr Denford Mutashu commended the role being played by the industry in reviving the economy despite some hardship they may be facing.

“I sincerely appreciate you all for persevering and contributing to efforts to revitalize local industry and create jobs in all provinces around Zimbabwe.

“There will always be challenges, but let us focus on the positives, such as the numerous chances for all of us to improve. Let us grow into underserved areas; the rural consumer is critical and must be empowered through service ease,” he said.

Gain Cash and Carry marketing manager Carl Kusada was ecstatic after their organisation scooped five awards at the ninth edition.

Among the awards are winner of the most improved retailer/wholesaler, winner of the fast-growing retailer/wholesaler, winner of the best branch network of the year, 1st runner up overall national retailer/wholesaler of the year and 1st runner up wholesaler of the year.

National Foods was also among those who went home all smiles scooping two prestigious awards as the top retail/wholesale supplier award and most improved supplier of the year award.

Hypery Brands marketing manager Charmaine Munetsi also represented her firm which won top retailer/wholesale supplier award and first runner up most improved supplier of the year.

Speaking after winning the Sustainability Innovation Champion award, Geo Pomona Waste Management chief executive and executive chairman Mr Dilesh Nguwaya said the awards are a recognition of the firm’s Innovative thrust to waste management.

Mr Nguwaya said their Social Corporate Responsibility mandate compliance is also facilitating the conferment of their prestigious honours.

He said the awards signal the work ahead in fast-tracking their deliverables following the commissioning of their site by President Mnangagwa on November 6.
