Gentlemen, this is how to dress for the Christmas party Tiger Woods

It is just 12 days before Christmas Day, but like what I said in last week’s edition, fashion is an everyday lifestyle.

Again, it is still worrisome for some men when it comes to dressing for an occasion and season.

My stylist always says that if you want to feel comfortable when it comes to dressing, check your mood and how it is going on with the day.

That would be easy, isn’t.

Now in the festive season, like Trends Alert mentioned, whether you are having Christmas drinks with your chief executive or workmates it is important to know how to dress for the event.

In fact, this is the time for parties and today the focus is on men.

Gentlemen, it is time for the 4-4-2 formation.

During a visit to the TrendZone designer wear in Kensington, Harare this week, I caught up with the owner, a stylist and fashion consultant, Florence Rupapa.

As we were discussing how men should dress this season, she highlighted that a golf t-shirt is a must have for every guy before she talked about colour codes.

She even said some men do not know how to dress for a Christmas party.

“Gone are the days when dressing for Christmas was for children,” said Rupapa. “Men need to look stylish, unless they are playing Santa Claus. Depending on the dress code, you can stay snug, while looking sleek effortlessly.

“A golf t-shirt is a must have this season, you can opt for a wool jersey and a scarf to keep yourself warm, since it is raining. Shades to consider are grey, brown, or blue. Leave the greens and reds to the ladies unless you want to be the Christmas tree.”

Rupapa shared her tips on men, which concurrently supports other renowned fashion icons.

1: Colour is still important on men too

◆ It should be a rule that when dressing up for Christmas, the colour scheme is very important, as you don’t want to end up looking like a holly bush or candy cane.

Choose more wearable tones of the classic Christmas colours, such as burgundy or forest green and pair one piece in that colour with neutrals so that it stands out.

Alternatively, you can add subtle Christmas flair through patterns instead of solid colours — think a tartan pocket square — or richly-toned accessories like a gold tie clip.

2: Dressing for smart casual Christmas party

◆ It may be hard to balance the dress codes, especially when it comes to a smart casual Christmas party.

The secret is, understand the theme first and then blend a laid back aesthetic with a business flair.

This includes a relaxed pair of trousers and an unbuttoned shirt, you can put on a vest or unbutton to chest level.

Try to roll up your sleeves and opt for lighter shades like pale blue or white.

Do not forget your straw hat.

◆ For a chilly rainy season, create a seamless ensemble by wearing a sleek blazer, and add an informal feel by swapping out dress shoes for high top sneakers.

Like they say, it’s important to know how to dress for the event.

◆ Some would want to wear their jeans, a t-shirt and some sneakers without feeling underdressed.

Remember your boss will still be around, don’t wear to insult but still keep the theme in mind.

◆ If you are spending the evening at a bar, opt for a dark pair of pants and a crisp white button-down and make sure you are comfy by wearing sleek sneakers or dress shoes to complete the look and mix and match colours to add festive cheer.

3: When it is a black tie Christmas party

◆ Others stick to the black tie formal event and if you have received an invitation that specifies ‘formal’ or ‘black tie’ attire, that means you need to look classy.

Traditionally, these events require a tuxedo, dress shirt and exceptional tailoring.

Try to choose from a shawl or peak lapel to flatter your shoulders, and opt for shades in the darker variety to suit the occasion. A bow-tie and pocket square will add the perfect finishing touch.

Experiment with fabrics like velvet and silk to help you to stand out amongst the crowd.
