SOME of Zimbabwe’s swimming prospects were on show yesterday at the Windview gala at Greendale Swimming Pool where Sunningdale’s St Martins were crowned the 2018 champions.

Windview, who were the host and defending champions felt there was need to put more competition by inviting top schools to this year’s tournament after dominating the gala for the past two years.

The tournament featured several age-groups from Under-9 to Under-13.

St Martins won 30 gold medals, 11 silvers and one bronze to claim top place while Abbeys took home six gold, five silvers and 20 bronze, Windview obtained two gold medals, 21 silvers and 10 bronze.

Windview sports director, Prince Nechavava said he had been impressed by the potential of the swimmers on show.

“I am very happy this was actually a platform for the children to develop, considering that our school uses hired pools hence this is a call for us to develop our own facilities,’’ Nechavava said.

Nechavava said the outbreak of cholera had derailed his team’s preparations and welcomed the competition brought by such schools like St Martin’s.
