Government has partnered the Council for the Blind in offering free eye cataract screening at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.

At least 150 people are expected to undergo surgery after the screening process. In an interview, Mashonaland West Ministry of Health and Child Care programmes officer Mr George Kambondo said about 150 surgeries will be conducted between June 21 and 22 this week.

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which is behind the iris and the pupil. Signs and symptoms of this condition are hazy or blurred vision.

The condition can be corrected through an operation on the eye, which if not done in time could lead to blindness. “The eye screening process, which started last week is ongoing and people are coming in their numbers,” said Mr Kambondo.“The programme is open to everyone but we are mainly targeting the elderly,” said Mr Kambondo.
