FOUR women from Mberengwa have been jailed for cultivating mbanje for commercial purposes. Pomedzerai Moyo (39), Farai Livombo (41), Svodai Moyo (47), and Shambadzirai Dehwa (39), all from Muzondiwa Village, Chief Muketi in Mberengwa, appeared separately before Mberengwa resident magistrate Ms Evia Matura facing a count of unlawful cultivation marijuana.

The quartet pleaded guilty. Mrs Matura sentenced Pomedzerai Moyo who was found cultivating 13 plants of mbanje to six months, Livombo and Svodai Moyo 90 days each for three plants each they were cultivating and Dehwa 24 months for the 56 plants she was found growing. Sentencing Dehwa, Mrs Matura considered that the accused person was growing dagga for commercial use.

Ms Matura said Dehwa was also a first time offender. Prosecutor, Ms Wadzanayi Shayanewako told the court that on October 4 in Muzondiwa Village, police officers on patrol got information that some villagers were growing mbanje in their gardens.
