Johannesburg – Foreign-owned shops in Johannesburg CBD have started closing their doors after rumours that a mob is on the streets threatening violence.

News24 reporter Mpho Raborife said most shops on Bree Street are already closed.

Metro police were monitoring the situation, said spokesperson Wayne Minnaar.

“We have observed that many of them are closing their shops. Why they are doing that we cannot confirm right now. The situation is being monitored closely,” Minnaar said.

Eyewitness News tweeted that there were claims of violence in the Johannesburg city centre where some shops had already been looted.

However, police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini told News24 he was unaware of any violence.-NEWS24
