ZIMBABWEANS must reflect on the tortuous journey embarked upon by freedom fighters in their quest for independence and acknowledge their immense sacrifices and heroic acts as they gallantly waged the liberation struggle, Acting President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has said.

Speaking at the National Heroes Acre in Harare where he presided over the burial of National Hero, military intelligence and military police stalwart, Brigadier General (Rtd) Shadreck Dingaan Ndabambi yesterday, the Acting President appealed to every Zimbabwean to rally behind President Mnangagwa’s people-centred economic policies.
The late Brig-Gen Ndabambi worked in the office of ZANLA Commander General Josiah Magama Tongogara during the war of liberation and was responsible for drawing operational and cartography materials that were used by freedom fighters in their missions.
He said for the full realisation of a sovereign and prosperous country as envisioned by freedom fighters such as the late Brig-Gen (Rtd) Ndabambi, the nation should come on board and support President Mnangagwa’s economic development agenda.
Acting President Chiwenga, himself a stalwart of the liberation struggle and a decorated military commander, is familiar with the path walked by Brig-Gen (Rtd) Ndabambi which he described as the “road of patriots”.
“As we accelerate towards our economic emancipation, I call upon the nation to rally behind the visionary leadership of our iconic leader, Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, as we leave no stone unturned in our thrust to transform, modernise and grow the economy of our country to the Zimbabwe we all want.
“The sacrifices by those that brought independence should be consummated by continuously galvanising all our efforts towards national development and prosperity.
“Let me assure you that the Government is working to promote the wider use of our local currency and is putting in place measures that will eliminate gaps that are creating arbitrage opportunities in the exchange market.
“Government will continue to monitor the operations of our financial markets and promote efforts to grow and stabilise our national currency,” said Acting President Chiwenga.
He highlighted infrastructural development projects undertaken by the Second Republic as well as other economic developments taking off across the country.
In honour of the role played by war veterans, the Acting President said, the Government would continue to prioritise their welfare.
“This gathering at our sacred national shrine to inter one of our liberation stalwarts should always serve as a reminder of the supreme sacrifice that Comrade Ndabambi and other veterans offered, in service to the nation,” said Acting President Chiwenga.
“Many Zimbabweans lost their lives fighting for the Independence that we enjoy and cherish today. It is, therefore, the duty and obligation of all of us who are still alive to guard our independence and sovereignty jealously.
“We should honour those that ignited and championed the struggle for our freedom by emulating their exemplary conduct and leadership to carry Zimbabwe forward.”
Acting President Chiwenga said it was incumbent on the nation to defend the revolution and emulate the revolutionary forefathers by rallying behind President Mnangagwa as he leads the country towards economic emancipation.
Turning to the national hero, he said the late Brig-Gen Ndabambi would be remembered for his immense contribution to the liberation struggle and for standing firm in defence of independent Zimbabwe during his time with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

“The nation has lost a dedicated, loyal and disciplined cadre who devoted his life to an illustrious service to the nation before and after Independence,” Acting President Chiwenga said.
“His character and personality were an embodiment of humility, loyalty, discipline and exemplary leadership.
“Today, what remains in our minds are the memories of a hard working, disciplined and brilliant general officer who was humble, patriotic and a selfless team player who will be dearly missed by the nation”.
