Armed with a deep sense of duty and obligation to achieve the Second Republic’s vision of improving the learning environment for disadvantaged learners in rural areas where some schools have recorded low pass rates, Mazowe North legislator Cde Campion Mugweni has made tremendous progress through addressing challenges that had been affecting the students.

The youthful Zanu PF MP is a farmer and business man with vast interests in the economic and social development of the Mazowe District.

Following the death of the late Mazowe North MP Cde Edgar Chidavaenzi, Cde Mugweni threw his name in the ring in 2016 and contested in the by-elections but lost to Advocate Martin Dinha.

However, in 2018, at the dawn of the Second Republic, he went on to contest in the harmonised elections where he won and became the youngest MP in Mashonaland Central province.

Cde Mugweni is one of the youngest legislators in the House of Assembly alongside peers like Cdes Tatenda Mavetera and John Paradza.

The Mazowe North legislator, in fulfilling President Mnangagwa’s mantra ‘Leaving no one and no place behind’, has been instrumental in inspiring development especially in the education sector where he is constantly touched by the plight of young children and pupils in his constituency which is largely made up of rural and farm population.

Speaking on the sidelines of the commissioning of a borehole at Madombwe Primary School in Chiweshe, where he also donated funds to procure furniture, Cde Mugweni said there was need to constantly improve and provide learning materials in rural schools.

Madombwe Primary School, which is in the mountainous part of Chiweshe, was constantly dogged by water woes with villagers walking long distances in search of clean water.

“We have commissioned a borehole at the school. This is in fulfilment of part of our electoral promises to drill more boreholes in this part of the constituency.

“I am also concerned about the low pass rates in some schools in my constituency. Some of the contributing factors are lack of access to clean water, shelter and food. This impacts on the learners’ performance in class,” said Cde Mugweni.

Another solarised borehole and water tank was commissioned at the Johane Masowe (Vadzidzi) owned Mudavanhu Primary School in Mvurwi which has an enrolment of 890 pupils.

Mudavanhu Primary School official, Mr Chakanaka Mutizira said Cde Mugweni also donated funds that were used to start a poultry project which ran three cycles with the proceeds helping to roof a three-class room block and procure cement and furniture.

The School head Mr Stanslous Mubaira said they were grateful for Cde Mugweni’s hands-on approach which has benefitted the Mvurwi community through his support of education provision in the area.

“Our MP, Cde Mugweni has been very instrumental in assisting us achieve President Mnangagwa’s vision of providing quality education. Our school is still under construction and we are happy that he is supporting us to provide quality education through the provision of a solarised borehole and building materials,” said Mr Mubaira

“We are also working hard to ensure that the school acquires a centre number as per the requirements of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education which entail that they should be an administration block and Grade Seven classroom for learners to sit for the national examinations there. We are donating 200 bags of cement for the construction of these blocks through Rickman Enterprises,” added Cde Mugweni.

As part of his efforts to make school life easier for the disadvantaged rural learners, Cde Mugweni has donated a grinding mill to Goteka Primary School whose proceeds are now used to buy stationery for the learners.

“Most learners at Goteka Primary School were being turned away because they did not have exercise books. We appealed to our MP and he donated a grinding mill to our school,” said Ms Rutendo Chabarika who hails from the area.

Authorities at the school said because of the huge catchment area, they are battling to construct adequate class rooms, and appealed for more assistance.

“Our Early Childhood Development centre has 250 children and we are battling to complete the construction of adequate class rooms. We have already approached our MP, Cde Mugweni to help us source for support. We know he is networked and can access some influential colleagues who can assist us.”
