Duo crowned CABS Candidates champs

TANAKA Katsande and Hazel Masango were crowned the 2023 CABS Candidates Chess Championships winners at Gifford High in Bulawayo on Tuesday.

The duo managed to qualify for the Zimbabwe nationals after their convincing wins.

Katsande, the 21-year-old Chitungwiza Knights team player, managed to win with 7,5points from nine games.

The seasoned campaigner was ahead of four players who finished tied second on seven points.

Bismark Bhobhojani a veteran, former nationals’ player was tied with Liberty Moyo, Elvis Chaoma and a CABS employee, Brian Dzvetera.

Masango managed to win ahead of Sally Muringani who had the same number of points seven but lost the direct encounter (head to head) tie break.

Mhondoro Chess Ambassador and former University of Zimbabwe team captain Tatenda Ndou failed to grab the tournament by a whisker after she finished third on 6,5 points.

Fourth place went to under-20 player Grace Zvarebwa on 5,5points and she scooped the best Under-20 women’s consolation prize.

Kelvin Tadisa (Jnr) won the Under-16 development section on six points after he was tied with Kudakwashe Tembio.

The two players were decided through direct encounter or the head to head as Allen Tungamirai was third on five points as Praise Matutu was fourth.

Tristan Mushaninga, Sean Ndlovu Devine Miti and Ayanda Bhaca completed the top seven.

Chief arbiter of the tournament Jarmil Ndoro said he was happy with the level of competition and the turn out.

“I am happy with the way the tournament went on. There were so many challenging encounters and we are happy that everything went on well.

“We are grateful to CABS for the support and we are looking forward to the 2024 nationals,” he said.
