The Herald, October 26 1979

THIS Sunday sees the final leg of the Zimbabwe Rhodesia national championship for motor cycle and Formula M racing cars at the Donnybrook dirt track.

Leading the motor cycles and unable to lose the lead position is Gary Kirk. Lying second is young Bobby Evans on a 500cc Jawa, which is rather like riding a camel as he has no suspension whatsoever, and apart from fitting disc brakes to the machine it is a straight speedway bike.

For a youngster to hold this bike on the track for 10 laps, let alone pull himself into second place, is an achievement in itself, especially as he was only ‘C’ class last year.  The interesting thing about the motorcycle winners on the dirt track and at the Glamis is that their, average age is only 17.

In the Formula M class John Sadler is holding first place followed by Clive Smith. There are four Smith brothers on the track at the moment, all in immaculate Formula M cars.

The sprint cars and super mods from Glamis will be competing in time trials on Sunday to give the crowd some extra thrills.

The club hopes in the future to have them racing at Donnybrook when the safety regulations have been adequately covered. There might also be a Formula M race for women drivers.

Club Datsun are holding an autocross tomorrow at Spizkop farm, on the Old Gatooma Road, starting at 2pm.

Members of all clubs affiliated to the RMSA with competition licences are welcome.

It will be followed by a braai and prize giving at No. 1, Desmond House, Richwell Avenue, Meyrick Park. Inquiries to the secretary of the meeting, Angela Clack, home phone 701129

LESSONS FOR TODAY

The Zimbabwe Challenge Rally has been the major motor racing event in this country since its inception way back in 1962.

Motorcycle racing, the recreational and competitive use of motorcycles, as a sport is practiced by both professionals and amateurs on roads, tracks, closed circuits, and natural terrain.

In Zimbabwe, Tanyaradzwa “Tanya” Muzinda started racing at the age of five and is the first female to have won a motocross championship since it started.

Emmanuel Bako started racing at the age of four and has more than forty medals and several trophies to his name. He has been crowned Zimbabwe´s national Pee Wee series champion.
