Police in Harare South and Chitungwiza have banned the carrying of dangerous weapons to maintain a peaceful environment ahead of harmonised elections scheduled for July 30.

In separate statements yesterday, Officer Commanding Harare South District Chief Superintendent Winston Muzah and Officer Commanding Chitungwiza District Chief Superintendent Mujiwa Sekayi said the bans were effective from July 19 to October 19 and July 13 to October 13 respectively.

“I believe on reasonable grounds that the carrying in public, whether openly or by concealment in a public place or public thoroughfare or public display of any of the following weapons or items capable of use as weapons — catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives, daggers or any traditional weapons whatsoever — is likely to occasion public disorder or a breach of the peace,” said Chief Supt Muzah.

“I hereby issue an order prohibiting the carrying of such weapons within my district or any part thereof for a period not exceeding three months that is from July 19 to October 19 as well as from July 13 to October 13.” —  Herald Reporter.
