D-Day for Mau Mau

Former legislator for Harare East and veteran boxing promoter Stalin Mau Mau (59) has pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and negligent driving after he caused a cyclist to hit his car, losing two teeth in the accident.Mau Mau appeared before magistrate Ms Blessing Murwisi last Wednesday and was remanded out of custody to today for sentence.

He told the court that he was a holder of a valid international driver’s licence.
“I obtained the licence in 1981 and it will expire in 2024, he said.

Unfortunately, when the police requested that I produce it, the licence mysteriously went missing. It takes seven days to replace it and I am sure if the court affords me some more time I can produce it.”

Ms Murwisi questioned Mau Mau why he had not regularised his licence since a month had elapsed before his case reached the courts after the accident.

Prosecutor Ms Barbra Ndoro told the court that when one was a holder of an international driver’s licence, he/she must regularise it according to local laws.

Ms Ndoro said in this case, evidence showed that Mau Mau was not a holder of any driver’s licence.   In mitigation, Mau Mau told the court that he was married and had six children and was a self-employed entrepreneur, surviving mainly on a US$300 pension per month.

“I also rendered assistance to the cyclist and he is getting medication,” he said.
I turned right in front of the on-coming cyclist at the shopping centre after realising that he was still far away, but I had to stop to avoid hitting the car in front of me.

Mau Mau left the court in stitches when he asked for drinking water from Ms Murwisi.
“If you ask me to continue talking, its becoming hard for me because my throat is now dry, he said. Please, Your Worship, give me some drinking water or ask anyone in the gallery on my behalf.”

Proven facts were that on September 8 at 3:50pm, Mau Mau was driving his double cab Isuzu truck due north along Domboshava Road and at the same time, John Mawiro was on his bicycle riding southwards.

Mau Mau turned right when he reached Winchdone shops in front of the oncoming cyclist, resulting in a collision which saw Mawiro falling onto the tarmac and losing two teeth in the process.
