ZIMBABWE cricket legends and former players led by Douglas Marrillier are set to turn back the hands of time in an exhibition twenty20 match that will also feature some of the greatest players from South Africa. The legends team will play against a Zimbabwe Select side in the main match of the day at Newlands Country Club in Harare at 2pm this Saturday.

Marillier, who played 48 One Day internationals for Zimbabwe in his international career in which he also pioneered the famous “scoop” shot that was perfected by Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan, will captain the Legends team which will also include three Proteas legends – Paul Adams, Lance Klusener, and Roger Telemachus. The South African trio is expected in the country tomorrow.

The Legends side also has Andy Blignaut, Edward Rainsford, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Gary Brent, former captain Prosper Utseya and ex-Zimbabwe top order batsman Gavin Rennie.

Former national team captains, Elton Chigumbura and Brendan Taylor, are also expected to line up in the legends squad.
Misheck Chieza of Chieza Sport, who are behind the event, said preparations for the event are at an advanced stage with the blessings from both Zimbabwe Cricket and the Sports and Recreation Commission.

“We are trying to promote sport entertainment in the country as well as taking the stage to foster development. All the legends and the players we talked to have confirmed their participation and everyone is excited by this initiative.

‘’We aim to have more events of this nature in the next two to three years. We are also looking to donate to charity from the profits realised on the day. Most of the players will auction their jerseys after the game and the money will go towards charity,” said Chieza.

Richmond Mutumbami will captain the Select side which has current Chevrons and fringe national team players such as Tendai Chatara, Chris Mpofu, Tendai Chisoro, Ryan Burl and Tarisai Musakanda.

Ramah Academy from Chitungwiza will warm the stage in an Under-12 match against Howzat Academy of Borrowdale Brook.
There is also going to be a match featuring old boys from the Marondera Select against Rainbow.
