HARARE City Council’s Environment Management Committee has said it will come up with ways to improve refuse collection in the capital.
Yesterday, the committee toured the council’s Waste Management Depot to get an appreciation of its operations.

Speaking after the tour, the committee’s vice chairperson, Councillor Prince Mutebuka said they will make sure that a new fleet of refuse compactors is bought and improve waste collection.

“We were having an appreciation of the waste management department’s operations, in particular their refuse compactors,” he said.

“There is need for us to intervene and assist the department from a policy perspective to make sure that we improve refuse collection in the city.

“We have received reports and several issues were raised, mostly on soft governance issues, finance and operational issues.

“This will be addressed as part of our waste management department turn-around strategy. We are going to work flat out to ensure that we have got a clean environment.”
