Harare City Council last night switched on Christmas lights in the Harare Gardens at a ceremony attended by people from all walks of life, officially marking the beginning of the festive season.

Municipal police and the International Youth Fellowship took turns to enthral the guests among them Local Government and Public Works deputy Minister Marian Chombo.

Korea-based members of the International Youth Fellowship left attendees mesmerised as they sang Shona gospel hymns fluently.

Acting Mayor Councillor Musarurwa Stewart Mutizwa said it was an important occasion in Harare as the day marked the beginning of the festive season.

“Today’s event is a very special one in that last year we could not gather due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the event was largely low key.

“This year this is the reason why we decided to have a hybrid event and made sure that those that are not able to come and witness this event in person can watch it in the comfort of their homes.

“Last year we were not even able to share the goodies that are associated with this event due to the pandemic,” he said.

Clr Mutizwa said Christmas was a time when people celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ and a time to associate as friends and family with joy.

“We should also take this time to remember those that are less fortunate in the communities we come from; those that live in the streets. This is the time to show them love,” he said.

“It is time to remember those who have lost someone especially during this pandemic, those in bereavement for whom this Christmas would be a particularly sad and difficult time,” he said.

The city’s Junior Mayor Jabulani Charamba urged people to be vigilant during the fight against Covid-19 pandemic.

“I urged those aged 16 and above to get vaccinated for their safety. Because we want to be here again next year celebrating,” he said.

Various companies and individuals also donated towards the Mayor’s Cheer Fund among them, Varun Beverages, the Pakistani community and Southland properties.
