Chiredzi Town Council has completed the $300 000 second phase of the water upgrading programme, enabling the local authority to connect water to the new high-density suburb of Makondo after a decade.

Speaking during a tour of the project, Chiredzi Town council chair, Councillor Gibson Hwende, said council was working flat out to ensure water was available in all wards.

“Given that we have managed to complete the 2.8km second phase water upgrading programme from Chigarapasi Junction to Makondo high-density suburb, we are happy that we have solved one of the pressing areas which has been affecting the flow of council business over the years,” said Clr Hwende.

He said their next project was to connect water to stands under development.

“We are currently serving 1 000 medium density stands in Melbourne Park,” said Clr Hwende. “These would offer a corridor for water that would flow to ward 5 and some parts of ward 6. If we achieve this, we would have solved pressing water challenges in all areas of the town.”

Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association chair Mr Jonathan Muusha said residents were now more motivated to settle their dues with council as there was evidence that council was working to improve service delivery.

“We are delighted that council is investing back to the community by focusing on pressing issues that affect lives of the people of Chiredzi,” he said.

“They upgraded West Road which is now tarred and now they have connected Makondo to the main water line. This is a good start for this new council and if they keep on the same path, Chiredzi will surely be a shining star by 2023.”

Chiredzi is eyeing municipal status in four years and council has been working flat out to change the complexion of the sugar-cane growing town.
