Cotton farmers start harvesting Cotton field

COTTON farmers from Manicaland have started harvesting their crops despite the delays experienced at the beginning of the season due to the late rains.

Manicaland Agritex crops and livestock officer Mr Cephas Mlambo said although the cotton marketing season commenced last month in most parts of the country, farmers in Manicaland only started harvesting recently with only 36 percent of cotton producers having completed the process so far.

“About 36 percent of all cotton farmers in the province so far have completed harvesting their product. Most of these are those from Chipinge from where the bulk of the cash crop come from,” said Mr Mlambo. He said a poor harvest is as expected since bulk of the plant was compromised by the dry spell during the 2018/2019 raining season.

“Against the target of 20 000 hectares for the whole province, only 10 000 hectares was planted.”
