A 22-year-old Harare man yesterday appeared in court for allegedly fondling and touching the private parts of a girl (12) before persuading her to cohabit with his friend in his house. Felix Tatenda Nyamanhindi appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Rumbidzai Mugwagwa facing charges of performing indecent acts on a minor.

He was remanded to January 5 on $50 bail. Prosecuting, Ms Linda Gadzikwa alleged that in September last year, Nyamanhindi was in town when he met the girl. He proposed to the girl and she accepted.

It is alleged that during the same month, Nyamanhindi and the girl agreed to meet at Nyamanhindi’s residence in Tynwald. Upon arrival at Nyamanhindi’s place, Nyamanhindi invited the girl into his room where he started fondling her breasts and private parts.

It is further alleged that on December 28, the girl disappeared from her parents’ residence, prompting her mother to lodge a missing person report with Mabelreign Police. The court heard that after lodging a complaint, the girl’s mother came back and found a letter in her daughter’s bedroom stating that she had decided to get married and that she was two months pregnant.

The girl stated in her letter that she had decided to get married to a person called Mind who lives in Westgate, Harare. She also advised her parents to claim the school fees they had paid for her.

The court heard that the girl’s parents made investigations and managed to convince the girl to come back home where she revealed that she had sexual intercourse with Nyamanhindi’s friend named Liberty Dzeka. Upon Dzeka’s arrest, he revealed to the police that Nyamanhindi had also performed indecent acts on the girl.
