Chief Justice Luke Malaba is today expected to deliver a keynote address to mark the official opening of the 2019 Legal Year at Mashonganyika Building, which houses the Constitutional Court in Harare. The High Court is expected to hear 44 murder cases during the first quarter.

Only one case of fraud, involving Chitungwiza land baron, Frederick Mabamba, is on the case list released ahead of the opening of the legal year.

Chief Justice Malaba will officiate at the main ceremony in Harare, while other ceremonies will run concurrently in Bulawayo, Masvingo and Mutare.

High-ranking Government officials, members of the legal fraternity and diplomats are among the invited guests.

The official opening of a new Legal Year is an important event in the judicial calendar, as it gives the Chief Justice an opportunity to review the key developments over the past year and highlight the challenges and opportunities over the next 12 months.

Chief Justice Malaba will also have an occasion to interact with the public, judges from various other courts, lawyers, diplomats and development partners.

Last year, Chief Justice Malaba delivered a 16-page speech pregnant with important issues, which took him up 70 minutes.
