Chitungwiza Municipality has pledged to assist at least 600 underprivileged families in its jurisdiction, an official has said. The municipality launched its inaugural Mayor’s Cheer Fund Dinner over the weekend at a local hotel in a bid to raise about $30 000 that will be directed towards helping the needy.

Acting town clerk Dr Tonderai Kasu said at least 600 families will benefit from the proceeds beginning next month.

“Let me hasten to say that proceeds realised from this event will be channelled towards helping or feeding at least 600 plus members who were identified in our community,” said Dr Kasu.

“We have had a number of activities, all aimed at sourcing for the provisions needed to distribute to the beneficiaries during the first week of March,” he said.

Dr Kasu thanked everyone who participated in the event.

“As it has become our culture every year to share, eat and socialise with such groups, who include the old-aged, people living with albinism, orphans and destitute, we are proud as a council, together with everyone who donated something towards this cause, that we thank you for your benevolence.

“It should be noted that this fundraising initiative will be ongoing all year round in order to consistently support the welfare of our fellow citizens within our communities,” he said.

The event was supported by companies such as Omin Africa, First Funeral, Doves, Nyaradzo and Christina Medical Fund.

Chitungwiza Municipality public relations officer Mr Lovemore Meya said: “As a local authority, we do what we can in our capacity to ensure that the less-privileged members in our community are taken care of.

“Even though times are hard, but we thank all those who stretched their hand towards the cause and we are still calling upon well-wishers to donate anything, be it foodstuffs, clothing, among other necessities.”

Recently, the local authority hosted a gospel musical show towards the same cause.

Another musical extravaganza is being organised in order to help fundraise for the needy.
