Chitungwiza Municipality has appointed Engineer David Duma as the new director of works with effect from September 1, following a recommendation from Government.

The local authority was operating without a substantive engineer since the beginning of the year after Engineer Maxwell Karenyi resigned in December last year.

Human resources director Mrs Mary Mukonyora confirmed the appointment last week.

“We now have a new works director who will assume duties beginning of next month (September),” she said.

“This was after council short-listed three candidates to the Local Government Board as per requirement and Mr Duma was regarded as the most competent.

“Council then adopted the recommendation from the board.”

Mrs Mukonyora said they were optimistic that his services would positively improve service delivery.

“We are very hopeful that having an engineer of his calibre who is qualified and registered with local boards will transform our service delivery in Chitungwiza,” she said.

“He is also going to head planning issues.”

The works department was merged with Urban Planning Services a few months ago after the council reverted to using its 2014 organogram.

Previously, Mr Conrad Muchesa was the director of planning services, but was fired in December 2016 because his position did not exist on the 2014 organogram.

He was then reinstated by the caretaker commission that was appointed by Government to run the affairs of Chitungwiza, but was fired again in May after council rescinded the decision made by the commission to reinstate him.
