Chisvo: Jazz music’s unsung heroine

The 20-year-old lanky musician who hails from Mabelreign, Harare, trades as “Vera” in the entertainment circles.

Currently studying towards a Marketing Management degree with a South African university, Chisvo started music industry at a tender age of seven.

“I can simply say music is a calling for me. I started singing at seven while doing Grade 3 at Dominican Convent. My school mates identified the potential in me during school functions such as musical plays, where I would be a leading vocalist,” said Chisvo.

Gifted with a good voice, Chisvo did her secondary education at the same school. She formed a seven-member accapella group while doing Lower Six.
“I came up with the group in 2009 specialising in jazz music during which time we would do vocals for the hip-hop band called The Monkey Nuts,” said Chisvo.

Her melodious voice made her a sought-after vocalist in jazz circles.
“I have been doing vocals for many artistes since 2009. I sang jazz music for some time because of my good voice and personality,” she beamed.

Drawing her inspiration from American star Joss Stone, Lykke Li and the Noisettes from the United Kingdom, talented Chisvo is destined for greater heights. Although she has not yet earned any accolades, she hopes to make it in showbiz.

“Truly speaking, I have never been in any competitions. The reason being that I was too shy to stand before the crowd and stage fright has been my biggest problem,” said Chisvo.

However, she is set to release a single track. The gifted songwriter-singer and guitarist showed her prowess at Book Café Sistaz Open Mic.
In her music, Chisvo dwells on social issues as well as her life experiences.

On “End of The Road”, she talks about all the frustrations she went through. She said it was a breaking point in her life and often calls it “when push comes to shove”.
Her style of music is euro-centric with a bit of afro-jazz. She said her reason for experimenting with different instruments was to change the feel of her music. Her road to stardom has been arduous.

“As young as I am, I face a number of challenges chief among them being getting money to sustain the band and recording. Also because of my age some people do not take me seriously. Sometimes they act unprofessionally,” she said.

Her wish is to perform at one of the world’s entertainment hubs in America, Madison Square Garden, while at home, sharing stage with celebrated star Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi will be an amazing experience for her.
It remains to be seen whether Chisvo will turn her dreams into reality.
