Chiredzi gets shot in the arm

Chiredzi Town has received nearly $600 000 from the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) for upgrading roads in the sugar cane-growing town.

Council said it was going to use the money to tar 4,7km of road in the town.

The firm that would carry out the work was expected to start as soon as council intensifies its programme to upgrade key roads in high density areas. Chiredzi Town engineer Wesly Kauma yesterday said work on tarring the 4,7km road in Tshovani Township was on course.

“The tarring of West Road has been in council’s plans for years,” he said.

“We are delighted that we are now managing to fulfil this dream.”

Town secretary Mr Charles Muchatukwa said the company undertaking the project would also upgrade the town’s sewer and water systems.

“Other than the tarring of West Road, the contracted company will also embark on the upgrading of our water and sewer reticulation systems,” he said. “We received $300 000 under the Public Sector Investment Programme from Government and we will use that to address water challenges in areas such as Makondo, Magwaza and the Light Industrial area.”

Chiredzi Town Council chair Councillor Gibson Hwende urged residents to continue supporting council by paying their bills.
