A 19-YEAR-OLD Chipinge man is lucky to be alive after he was shot twice by a security guard who suspected him of being a macadamia nuts thief.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the incident.

“On May 19 at around 7am at Clear Water Estate in Chipinge, Tongai Mubayiwa, who was employed as a security guard, shot Brighton Mhlanga of Mugubera Village under Chief Mutema in Chipinge, suspecting that he wanted to steal macadamia nuts from the plantation,” he said.

“It is alleged that Mhlanga was on his way home, walking along a macadamia nuts plantation at Clear Water Estate where Mubauyiwa works as a security guard.

“Mubayiwa suspected that Mhlanga was a thief who was trying to trespass into his territory. Mubayiwa drew his gun and shot the complainant twice on the ribs and on the right leg. His weapon was identified as a double barrelled Mossberg Optima.

“On that same day, Mhlanga limped to Chipinge Police Station to make a report that he had been shot. Police responded to the report and attended the scene before arresting Mubayiwa for contravening Section 189, as read with Section 89 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23), which is attempted murder.
