Chinhoyi Municipality has awarded Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) a tender to install solar traffic lights worth $135 000 as it moves to get city status.

In a recent interview, the local authority’s spokesperson Mr Tichaona Mlauzi said the intersection of Chegutu Road and Harare-Chirundu Highway has often been plagued by accidents.

“The project is going to be financed from council’s own financial resources and we have awarded the tender to Chinhoyi University of Technology,” he said.

“It is important that we use institutions of higher learning at our disposal in our municipality to provide solutions to our challenges.

“In doing so, we establish mutually beneficial synergies.”

A total of five traffic lights at accident-prone junctions are going to be installed to reduce carnage and congestion.

“The installation will enable easy flow of traffic at the following junctions – Park Street and Herbert Chitepo; Magamba Way and Montrose Ave; Robert Mugabe and Chaedza turnoff; Robert Mugabe Road and Market turnoff, or Tangwena end,” explained Mr Mlauzi.

Chinhoyi Municipality, he said, has opted to use solar energy to reduce maintenance costs.
