The Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe yesterday donated an assortment of groceries worth US$10 000 to the Zimbabwe Parents of Handicapped Children Association (ZPHCA).

Speaking during the handover of the donation, Ms Wang Wei, wife to the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, said the gesture was meant to appreciate the role the organisation was playing in championing the rights of the people living with disabilities.

“I would like to take this opportunity to commend the work you are doing as ZPHCA creating a platform to promote and protect children’s rights and creating a society in which every child with a disability can enjoy their rights and be equal to each and every child,” she said.

She said disabled people deserved equal opportunities and hailed the Government for its commitment to support this group of people.

“I believe children with disabilities have the same potential as their peers to lead fulfilling lives and to contribute to the social, cultural and economic vitality of their communities,” she said.

“I am glad that Zimbabwe is a model country for disability rights and as the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe we have made ourselves available to work with different children organisations around Zimbabwe.”

Ms Wang said China was committed to cementing its relations with Zimbabwe in all sectors and was confident that the win-win cooperation between the two peoples would produce tangible results.

“The Chinese Government also attaches to strengthening the friendship and cooperation with Zimbabwe in all areas,” she said.

“Looking ahead we must continue working together to further enhance all level exchanges, political relations, enlarge our bilateral trade, investment cooperation in various fields and continue with our mutual support in international and regional affairs.”

ZPHCA patron Mrs Miriam Kangai said the donation would go a long way in assisting the people living with disabilities.

“We are grateful to the Chinese Embassy for what they have done for us today,” she said. “The food and sanitary wear will assist our people because they are vulnerable in the society. More still needs to be done for people living with disabilities under the present environment.”
