Traditional leaders have hailed the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF)’s commitment to serve the nation by carrying out developmental projects in various communities countrywide.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 38th ZDF celebrations at the National Sport Stadium on Tuesday, Chiefs Council president Chief Fortune Charumbira said ZDF should be applauded for assisting communities.

“Security extends beyond the use of guns and ammunition,” he said.

“The force’s community assistance has lessened insecurity among people under our jurisdictions.”

Chief Charumbira said the assistance rendered to communities by ZDF would go a long way in enhancing people’s social, economical and intellectual capacity.

“Embracing the defence forces in our communities is something that we want to see. They are part of our economic set-up,” he said.

Health and Child Care Minister David Parirenyatwa welcomed the efforts by ZDF to provide health facilities and services in communities.

“We appreciate the sterling work the ZDF is doing, promoting health and taking it to the people,” he said.

“The more clinics are built, the more people have access to health.”

Minister Parirenyatwa added that the clinics built by ZDF were of high quality.

In his keynote address, President Mnangagwa applauded ZDF’s corporate social responsibility activities.

“To this end, our forces continue to showcase that they are a people’s force and committed to serve the nation,” he said.

During the year, the ZDF carries out various projects, helping communities in building infrastructure like schools and hospitals.

The projects are then handed over to the communities during the ZDF Community Week each year.

In addition to participation in the community assistance projects, the ZDF also conducts medical outreach programmes where officers provide free medical, dental and    pharmaceutical assistance to selected communities.
