Mashonaland East’s Chief Nechombo (Langton Chikukwa) has encouraged the nation to look after the elderly, since they play a pivotal role in the development of the nation. Chief Nechombo made the call last Saturday when he donated groceries to over 100 elderly people in his community.

The event was also complemented with lunch that attracted villagers from different areas. They also received clothes and bathing soap from Shamwari Yemwanasikana, a non-governmental organisation, at the handover ceremony held at Hudya Primary School. Chief Nechombo said looking after the elderly should be everyone’s responsibility.

“As Nechombo clan we have a day reserved to have a special treat for our elderly people,.This day was created by the United Nations and the celebrations are in October. We saw it fit to observe the day and as a chief I took it into consideration with my people to leave a legacy of remembering the elderly. They are the ones responsible for the good life we live and being successful in our jobs. They have a pivotal role in our lives because they conduct prayers on our behalf, like for one to secure a job, excel in education and in business. We can accomplish everything through their prayers. If they are happy, whatever we do becomes a success,” said Chief Nechombo.

Chief Nechombo encouraged everyone to be responsible.

“I would like to urge everyone to be responsible and look after our elderly people,” he said. “We started this programme last year at Nyarutepo Primary School after we looked for the elderly. We looked for the top 100 people, who are 85 years and above with the oldest being 114 years. This year the eldest is 103 years, I donate to them through help from other people.”

The beneficiaries could not hide their joy.

“We would like to thank our chief, and Shamwari Yemwanasikana for the donation,” said Mbuya Stellar Bondamakara of Makaha.
