Chegutu demonstrators freed on bail

MDC Alliance’s provincial deputy organising secretary, Edward Dzeka and Chegutu West district youth vice chairperson Sheunesu Chimunyemba, who were arrested on Friday for allegedly inciting violence, were Monday released on bail.

The two appeared before Chegutu magistrate Noel Gwatidzo and were each granted $1 500 bail with reporting conditions.

Dzeka, who is also a Chegutu Municipality Ward 9 councillor and Chimunyemba were arrested and detained at Chegutu CID Law and Order Section, before their initial court appearance on Saturday, where bail ruling was deferred to Monday. Prosecuting for the State, Abigail Sana said on the date, the pair incited Chegutu-based MDC Alliance supporters to stage a demonstration against the Government. Following their arrest, MDC Alliance took to Twitter and claimed that the two had been abducted at gunpoint before police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi dispelled the claims.
