The Roman Catholic Church has thrown its weight behind Government’s ongoing thrust to empower women, saying the move will engender socio-economic development in the country.

Over 2 000 Roman Catholic Church believers attending the annual Marian Guild Congress at Gokomere Mission here showered praise on Government for strides made so far in empowering  women.

Marian Guild is a division of the Roman Catholic Church comprising women dedicated to responsible motherhood marked by hard work and resilience.

The congress, for Catholic women who say they follow the footsteps of Mary the Mother of Christ, is running from August 22 to 25.

Father Peter Chimombe, who is the Spiritual Advisor for Masvingo Diocese, yesterday told The Herald on the sidelines of the congress that that the Marian Guild vision resonated well with Government policy of uplifting the living standards of women and protecting their rights.

“The Roman Catholic Church encourages women to be well-behaved and work hard,’’ said Fr Chimombe.

“The creation of the ministry responsible for women affairs and launch of the Women’s Empowerment Bank and other programmes that support women by the Government is highly appreciated by the Roman Catholic Church, particularly the Marian Guild congregants.’’

The Catholic priest said women could be cardinal pillars for the country’s development agenda if they were given relevant scope and support.

“Gone are the days when women used to be stereotyped as mere housewives with no capacity to turn around the economy through sustainable projects.

“We really applaud Government policies that support women,” said Fr Chimombe.
