As a writer, many times I have had to ask myself why I need to support my viewpoint with a quote from a Western writer (valid though it might be) when there is so much talent in our midst. Why not use their ideas as well? I also recall that some time last year some online readers accused this writer of being Eurocentric since I always used Western quotes. I couldn’t blame them because that was a fact. But, you make do with what is available, and in most cases, Western publications are easily accessible to us.
It is within this context that I congratulate 38-year-old writer Rabison Shumba for his latest publication “Fountain of -

In management theory, they call it “the sitting next to Nelly syndrome.” When one lives in an environment that is rife with speculation, rumour-mongering and sheer malice, there is a tendency that some of that can easily rub off on you and/or affect you positively and/or negatively.
I did some introspection, and am still doing so, and in the process I find myself continually asking: When Africa is in dire need of development models, is riding on the crest of other people’s successes the best way to display showmanship? -
To most people the Quill Club, which is a part of one of Harare’s oldest hotels, is nothing but a social space for imbibers. To others, it could be a pub, but one with a difference — a pub where members of the public from various walks of life — meet up with journalists, over a glass of this and that.
It is as old as the hotel itself, and its central location to the corridors of power makes it unique. Surrounded by Munhumutapa Building, the centre of Government, Parliament, the Supreme Court -

E M Forster’s novel Howards End (1910) left a lasting impression in our literature class. Not that we could identify with the English lifestyle therein, but it was for this beautiful quote, which became a sing-a-song in our dormitory: “Only connect! That was the whole of her sermon.
“Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted, and human love will be seen at its height. Live in fragments no longer. Only connect, and the beast and the monk, robbed of the -
Today is International Women’s Day (IWD). This year’s theme is “Connecting girls, inspiring futures”. Increasingly, the girl child has been the target in the IWD discourse. The 2009 theme was, “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls”.
In 2008, we had “Investing in women and girls”, while the 2007 theme was “Ending impunity for violence against women and girls”. -
If Time magazine declared 2011 the year of protests, then 2012 will go down in history as the year of elections and more elections — on all five continents. It is a year that is redefining the 21st century, a year when paradigm shifts will define the socio-political landscapes.
So much is at stake, and the electoral process looks set to shape the way we look at things.
But, 2012 will actually come down in recorded history as the year when more than fifty countries will -
President Mugabe on Tuesday celebrated his 88th birthday. Congratulations! Makorokoto! Amhlophe! The good Lord has saved him from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He has satisfied him with long life. (Psalm 91)
The President gave wide-ranging interviews to both the print and electronic media, and these gave -

Although separated by expanses of sea waters, Zimbabwe's relations with the Republic of Cuba date back centuries, and not since Zimbabwe's liberation struggle as most of us would want to think. It is a relationship, which is not just enhanced by the leaderships of President Mugabe and his Cuban counterparts, former president Fidel Castro and incumbent president Raul

A fortnight of non-visibility on the radar was like a thousand years, and it made me realise and appreciate how much pleasure and satisfaction I derive from saying my two cents worth.
There were a number of year-enders touching on every aspect of what people believed was newsworthy in 2011, and a lot of envisioning about 2012. My own list is no longer newsworthy, except for one issue. -

We are still wishing each other a "prosperous and/or happy New Year". Some prefer, "Compliments of the season or love, peace and happiness." -

Greed and super profits are now part of the cocktail that is killing hundreds of people through needless accidents. Add to that the uncaring attitude displayed by many - what is technically referred to as human error - then you wonder why there is that desire to self-decimate ourselves.
