THE second edition of the Castle Lager Africa 5s, an amateur five-aside football competition which this year will incorporate women, was launched in Harare yesterday.

The grand final this year will be held in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

The local tournament is set to begin in three weeks’ time and the top two teams will join six other country representatives in Tanzania.

The number of participants has been increased from five to seven with Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda coming on board.

Dairibord represented Zimbabwe in Zambia last year and finished third.

Delta marketing executive Irimayi Muzorewa said they were looking forward to a successful and competitive event.

“Following the success of the inaugural Castle Lager Africa 5s last year, we are launching the second edition of the CASTLE AFRICA 5s Zimbabwe Edition,’’ said Muzorewa.

“Last year, Zimbabwe finished third in the continental finals in Lusaka, Zambia.

“This will be the largest 5-a-side amateur football tournament in the country and will be played across Zimbabwe.

“The five-a-side format is progressive, fast-paced, and fun but, most importantly, it’s accessible which makes it one of the most popular formats of the game in Africa.

“What we love about five-a-side football is how it brings people together in the spirit of friendship and camaraderie.

“We will have our very own football ambassador who will act as a mentor and spokesman for the league, Tinashe Nengomasha.

“He joins other legends promoting the same cause across the continent.’’
