Captain salutes Zimbabwe Defence Forces

WARRIORS Select defender and captain Godknows Murwira has paid glowing tribute to Zimbabwe’s Defence Forces and felt privileged to play in a football match to celebrate them and the work they do for the nation.
Murwira came on in the second half of the ZDF Trophy final, which his side won courtesy of a 1-0 win over the ZDF Select at Rufaro yesterday.
Simba Bhora striker Tymon Machope’s first-half goal was enough to secure victory for the Warriors Select before a packed stadium.
But for Murwira, who was handed the armband during the regular Warriors’ COSAFA Cup campaign, yesterday’s game was more than just about the football.
The versatile CAPS United defender draws a lot of inspiration from being selected to be part of the momentous occasion to celebrate the country’s defence forces.
“I am happy to be part of the team that took part in today’s match. As long one is called up to wear the national jersey it demands a lot of dedication and courage,’’ Murwira said.
“And to celebrate the Zimbabwe Defence Forces day means a lot as our forces are responsible for a lot of work in providing security for the nation and besides that, they have also gone on to do a lot of social work uplifting the communities.
“Of course, the team was brought together in a short space of time but everyone is eager to play and represent his country,’’ he said.
Murwira said the fact that the two teams drew their players from local Premiership and Division One sides meant the game was always going to be a close contest.
“The game was a close one considering that most of the players know each other from the local leagues.
“Currently most of the players in the ZDF select side are playing in the lower divisions but they all have Premier Soccer League experience.
“But it was good for us as we took one of the chances that fell our way while our opponents failed to utilise their chances.
“That made the difference,’’ added Murwira.
