Call to boost Zim, Moza economic ties Cde Monica Mutsvangwa

Manicaland Bureau
It is crucial to strengthen ties between Zimbabwe and Mozambique, as the two countries share common economic boundaries and liberation war histories, the Governor of Manica Province, Mozambique, Mr Alberto Ricardo Mondlane, has said. He made the remarks when he graced the country’s 38th Independence Day celebrations, which were held at Sakubva Stadium in Mutare on Wednesday. Mr Mondlane was leading a high-powered delegation from the neighbouring country.

“We are used to working together and today we are here celebrating Zimbabwe’s independence. Zimbabwe’s independence is also our independence because we were together during the struggle.

“We are also here because we want to find solutions to our economic challenges. We have a lot of challenges in the economic area. We have economic resources and the biggest resource that we have is human capital,” he said.

Mr Mondlane said Harare and Maputo should try to foster mutually beneficial partnerships.

“We are trying to work together and develop human capital; this is the first phase. From here, we will be able to do whatever we want. The important thing is to develop human capital. As a government, we have to look at all avenues of development,” he said.

Zimbabwe and Mozambique, he also added, were endowed with human and natural resources that could be used to improve people’s livelihoods.

Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs Cde Monica Mutsvangwa applauded the Mozambican delegation for their gesture, saying there was need for strengthening economic ties.

“The visit by is Excellency to Zimbabwe shows that we are one people and we need to increase economic cooperation. We have been together in times of war and in this time of prosperity we need to increase that cooperation. We need our people to enjoy since we speak the same language as the two Manicas and we share the same borders,” she said.

Minister Mutsvangwa noted that there was a possibility for the provinces forging bilateral agreements aimed at boosting development.

Meanwhile, another Mozambican delegation led by Mossourrize district administrator Mrs Joazine Jarsime was also in Chipinge to attend the independence celebrations in solidarity with Zimbabwe. The delegation comprised government officials and members of the ruling party Frelimo.

The celebrations were held at Gaza Stadium, with Chipinge district administrator Mr William Mashava reading the President’s speech. Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Jarsime urged the two countries to uphold their longstanding relationship.

“On behalf of people from neighbouring Mossourrize district, we would like to congratulate the people of Zimbabwe for attaining 38 years of self- rule.

“We are urging the people in this district and their neighbouring counterparts to uphold their longstanding relationship, which was established long back during the liberation struggle,” she said.

The Mozambican delegation also visited Chipinge District Hospital where they donated hampers and cash to babies born on the day.

“In Mozambique it is our tradition to donate to babies born on independence day; hence, we found it wise to do the same to our counterparts here,” she said.
