A BINDURA man recently appeared in court facing two charges for contravening the Electricity Act and five counts of theft of electricity cables. David Kamutiti (32) of Chizanga Village, Chief Mutumba was remanded in custody to November 19 when provincial magistrate Mrs Vongai Guwuriro will make a ruling on his bail application.

Prosecutor Mr Clement Kuwanda told the court that on the first count, Kamutiti went to Arundel Farm in Bindura during the night of October 1 and cut 9m of copper cables worth $441 and disappeared without being noticed.
He was arrested by the police on October 31 and admitted to stealing the copper wire and six other counts.

On the second count, Mr Kuwanda said on an unknown date, but during the period between August and September 2018, he again went to Gatingwood Farm in Matepatepa and cut 10m of copper cables from the transmission power line worth $500.

“For the third count, the accused went to Freda Rebecca Mine on October 30 and cut the fence at the yard store,” said Mr Kuwanda.

“He stole 120m of copper cables worth $120 000 which were later recovered, but in the form of processed copper weighing 90 400 grammes.

“On the fourth count, the accused used the same modus operandi and went to Freda Rebecca Mine scrap yard and stole 16m of copper cables valued at $60 000.”

Mr Kuwanda said for the fifth count, on August 17, the accused also stole 200m of copper cables valued at $100 000 from Freda Rebecca Mine.

He said Kamutiti also went to Freda Rebecca Mine on August 2 and stole 120m of copper cables and stole 7m of copper cables at the same mine on April 13.
He said $320 941 worth of copper cables was lost.
