GIANTS Highlanders have appealed to their supporters to play a big part in the terraces on Sunday as they hope to break a nine-year winless jinx against champions FC Platinum.

The Bulawayo giants head into the match high in confidence after accomplishing another fine feat at the National Sports Stadium last weekend when they beat Black Rhinos for the first time in six years.

But it is their record against FC Platinum that has reached unacceptable levels. And, yesterday the Bulawayo giants took to their social media to drum up support ahead of the important fixture.

“Dear MaBossolona Amahle & Team Away. We liked the singing that you did on Saturday at the National Sports Stadium. May we please bring the vibe to Soweto/BF this Sunday. Your support is greatly appreciated,” said Highlanders.

Bosso picked their first three points of the season last week when they edged Black Rhinos 1-0 courtesy of a strike by McKinnon Mushore, which was his first goal for the club.

This was Highlanders’ first Castle Lager Premier Soccer League win against Black Rhinos in Harare since 2017.

With the game now behind them, Highlanders are facing a more daunting task against FC Platinum who are in the hunt for a record fifth consecutive championship this season.

Highlanders have gone for close to a decade without beating FC Platinum in a league match, but their technical manager Baltermar Brito seems to have mastered a way of ending jinxes.

Bosso last collected three points against Pure Platinum Play in August 2014 when they won 1-0 at Mandava Stadium.

Besides putting to an end Highlanders’ away curse to Black Rhinos, in September last year Brito broke Bosso’s 32-out of Bulawayo winless league run which dated back to July 2018 when they edged Triangle United 1-0 at Gibbo Stadium.

Brito yesterday said he was ready for the Sunday game against FC Platinum.

“Highlanders has not performed well against FC Platinum in the past years, but that’s all in the past now. We want to break that record.

“I am ready for the game on Sunday and to meet our fans for the first time at home this season,” said Brito.

Darlington Mukuli who was also present at the press conference said the win against Black Rhinos lifted the morale in the Bosso camp.

“Our previous win away to Black Rhinos was a good confidence booster as we head to the clash against FC Platinum on Sunday,” said Mukuli.

Both Highlanders FC and FC Platinum go into this match after winning their second matches of the 2023 season.

FC Platinum collected their second win of the 2023 season when they beat Cranborne Bullets 1-0 at Mandava Stadium.

Highlanders have gone close to 10 years without beating FC Platinum in a league match. Bosso last collected three points against FC Platinum in August 2014 when they won 1-0 at Mandava.

Last season, Bosso managed to fight back from a two-goal deficit and were level 2-2 in the 90th minute of the game when Washington Navaya headed in their second goal.

But Walter Musona’s free kick in the dying minute of the game was a dagger to the heart of Bosso as they ended up losing the match 3-2 in front of a crowd of 8 000 fans.

Bosso are banking on the 12th man to make the difference on Sunday.
