ZIMBABWE’S pig farming industry has recorded phenomenal growth after the Zimbabwe Agricultural Growth Programme (ZAGP) imported 245 top quality genetics under the Value Chain Alliance for Livestock Upgrading and Empowerment (VALUE) project in 2020, that Have since farrowed 8 100 piglets reinforcing prospects for a bright future for the sector.

The imported genetics are known for their high fertility rates, fast growth and disease resistance, making them ideal for the local farming conditions.

Mashonaland West pork value chain integrator, Mr George Mudanga has since confirmed the increase in pigs born alive.

“The average net weight has increased to between 68 and 70 kilogrammes in a period stretching from 19 to 20 weeks. This increase in weight is a significant improvement and a testament to the benefits of using new genetics in breeding programmes,” said Mr Mudanga.

The successful production of piglets from the imported genetics has been a game-changer for the pig industry in Zimbabwe.

“We are planning to expand the use of these genetics by introducing even more varieties. This move is aimed at further improving the quality of breeding stock and increasing productivity and profitability for farmers,” he said.

ZAGP VALUE team project coordinator, Mr Newton Chari said many farmers had adopted the new genetics, leading to increased productivity and profitability.

“The success of this programme is expected to have a significant impact on the country’s economy, ensuring a sustainable future for Zimbabwe’s pig industry,” he said.

The project works with private sector players namely Bradford and Shamiso farms as integrators to support small and medium-scale producers.

The project has made a positive impact on the economic opportunities of 11 000 smallholder farmers who were stuck at different sub-optimal stages of commercialisation and growth.

The Government is also making relentless efforts to ensure the pig industry records economic growth with the President launching a piggery scheme in which piglets were distributed to some farmers.
