BINDURA Municipality has appealed to Government for assistance with the procurement of water treatment chemicals after the town went for days without running water last week after the chemicals ran out.

In an interview, Bindura mayor Councillor Carlos Tokyo, who was flanked by councillors Oliver Mukombwe, Tongai Jack, Aniko Chikuwanyaga-Midzi, said the situation had been exacerbated by suppliers demanding forex.

“Council has run out of water treatment chemicals and residents have gone for days without water supplies,” he said.

“Most of the companies that supply the chemicals are demanding payment in forex.

“If the situation continues like this, we will be forced to temporarily close down all council schools until the situation improves.”

Clr Tokyo said they had sent their town engineer, Engineer Talent Devera, to Harare to engage their suppliers of water treatment chemicals.

Bindura Municipality is reeling under high water treatment costs as their source of raw water, Mazowe River is being polluted by artisanal gold miners.

The municipality has committed a large chunk of its 2019 budget towards drawing water from Masembura Dam to reduce the water treatment costs.
