A 32- year-old Bindura man who was in isolation at Bindura Prison because of COVID19 was slapped with two years in prison for trying to escape from prison.

Christopher Ndiripo was on remand facing allegations of stock theft and pleaded guilty to jailbreaking when he appeared before Bindura magistrate Mr Tinashe Ndokera.

Prosecuting, Mrs Paidamoyo Machakata said on September 16 this year at around 11am and at Bindura Prison, Ndiripo created an opening by folding the corrugated iron sheets that were used as a precast wall at the prison cell.

A prison officer, Mr Evans Matafari who was on duty heard a banging noise from the cell where Ndiripo was in isolation.

Mr Matafari went to investigate and found Ndiripo halfway out of the cell through the opening he had created.

He then pulled his head back inside the cell after realising that he was caught.

He was arrested and the matter reported to the police.
