Big boost for Tanya Muzinda Tanya Muzinda

TANYA Muzinda’s dream of participating at her second Thor Supercross and Motocross Winter Olympics in the United States in November got a huge boost on Thursday night after several companies and individuals pledged to bail her out.

The star female motocross rider is now competing in international races, but financial challenges have been hampering her progress.

She has since missed out on a number of international events. Concerned by her plight, Primary and Education Minister Professor Paul Mavima convened a fundraising cocktail for the 14-year-old at the ZimParks Gardens in Harare on Thursday night.

And individuals, as well as companies responded positively with several pledging cash and equipment towards her cause.

Muzinda has been racing on an old model bike, one of the reasons why she has not been able to hit top form in recent events.

Tanya’s father, Tawanda, who also doubles as her manager and trainer, confirmed receiving sufficient pledges. “I would like to thank Minister Mavima for coming aboard to help her out. Tanya has already missed out on several opportunities abroad, where she had been pencilled to participate because of lack of financial resources.

“She has also been using an old-model bike, but with the coming in of Zimbabweans from all walks of life as well as corporate backing, I hope all that will be addressed and enable Tanya to showcase her talent without any hiccups.”

Tanya also thanked the well-wishers who pledged and supported her during Thursday night’s function. “Words cannot express how I am feeling now. I am overwhelmed by the support l got from the corporates, church leaders, civic society, media, musicians and friends.

“With such a short notice I didn’t think we would have 20 people to the fundraiser, but on such a short notice, having over 100 guests, it’s incredible. My thanks goes to Professor Mavima and #FriendsofTanya for organising this event. It was a huge success and I am hopeful that they will extend it to others who are doing something to their communities,” said Tanya, who was dressed by Jan Jam.
