Internationally-acclaimed stone sculptor Dominic Benhura is set to hold a solo show at Amanzi restaurant in Chisipite beginning tomorrow.

Benhura last had a solo exhibition in the country 12 years ago as he focused more on international adventures.

The works on show will reflect on Benhura’s 40 years in sculpture. It will be an insight into the journey of a self-taught sculptor.

The 51-year-old Murehwa-raised sculptor, who is famous around the world for his signature motion masterpieces, will reunite with followers of his art in the country.

Dubbed “Dominic Benhura Exhibition”, the show will run for a month, closing on April 15.

In an interview, the award-winning sculptor said the show comprises a broad spectrum of his old and new masterpieces.

“As you might be aware I have always staged solo shows even within group exhibitions I would have my own show. So this is my first solo exhibition in 12 years and the sculptures will reflect the 40 years that I have been working on stone,” Benhura said.

Asked what art lovers can expect at the show, Benhura said there are a lot of positives to look forward.

“Sculpting has always been my hobby and I do it because I enjoy carving stones. In my early works, I would put more details and now as I grow older I am putting less details while in other instances you find I am putting more details than I used to, so yes there are lot of exciting changes,” he said.

Vivienne Croisette, the curator at ZimSculpt, who are hosting the exhibitions confirmed that this was Benhura’s largest show to date.

“This has never been done before because it is Benhura’s largest solo exhibition in Zimbabwe comprising works for the last 40 years.

“There are 25 large garden sculptures and 15 small sculptures which will be on display. Amanzi Restaurant has beautiful gardens and this is the perfect venue for the exhibition,” she said.

ZimSculpt promotes works by over 200 Zimbabwean sculptors worldwide. They have worked with Benhura in overseas shows for the past 19 years.
